Foeticide

A medical procedure performed to terminate a fetus in cases of severe congenital anomalies, maternal health risks, or selective reduction in multifetal pregnancies. It is done using medications or injections and is legally regulated. Ethical concerns and legal considerations vary across different countries and medical guidelines.

Amnio Reduction

A therapeutic procedure used in pregnancies with polyhydramnios to remove excess amniotic fluid, reducing uterine pressure and minimizing risks like preterm labor, placental abruption, and maternal discomfort. It is often performed under ultrasound guidance and can help improve pregnancy outcomes, especially in twin pregnancies or fetal abnormalities.

RFA (MCT)

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in monochorionic twin pregnancies is a minimally invasive procedure that selectively stops blood supply to one twin in cases of severe complications like twin-reversed arterial perfusion (TRAP) sequence or twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. This helps improve survival chances for the healthier twin while preventing serious complications.

Thoracentesis

A medical procedure where a needle is inserted into the pleural space to drain excess fluid or air, relieving symptoms of pleural effusion, infections, or pneumothorax. It is commonly used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in lung diseases, including cancer, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and heart failure-related effusions.

Vesicocentesis

A prenatal procedure where a needle is inserted into the fetal bladder to drain urine in cases of lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO). It helps relieve pressure, prevent kidney damage, and improve fetal survival. It is usually guided by ultrasound and may be followed by vesicoamniotic shunting.

Amniotic Band Release

A fetal surgery performed to release constrictive amniotic bands that can restrict fetal limb growth, leading to amputations or deformities. This condition, known as amniotic band syndrome, occurs when fibrous bands from the amniotic sac wrap around fetal body parts, impairing circulation and causing severe congenital anomalies.
